Intervention: Cabinets in the New House

Mom and Dad, it might be time for an intervention. We are concerned about the choice of cabinets. OAK has not been put in a house since 1990 that I am aware of. It is the number one wood being removed from houses during remodels and cabinet refinishing. Most people are doing all they can to rid their houses of oak-- much like it's comtemporary shrub the nasty "fitzer," which also was big for some reason in the 80s.

The concern of alder being soft is most likely a non-issue. I've never heard anyone be concerned over the hardness or softness of a wood used for their kitchen cabinets. Wood floors, on the other hand, are often decided based on hardness and durability and in relation to traffic flow. I/we (the kids old enough to know better) are afraid that you will date and cheapen your nice house with oak cabinetry. There is a reason everyone moved to alder, knotty alder, maple, etc.

Please think this through and don't make us bring someone from HGTV channel to get you professional help. :)

Your concerned kids.

  1. You're really putting oak in your house???? It's what I like the very least about my kitchen, the oak cabinets. Nobody is going to be flying around chucking things that will mark up your soft wood. Don't make a fatal mistake. Yikes!!

  2. Hi I will write a post here because well we Fuller's do not tend to keep our opinions to ourselves. I have Knotty Alder Cabinets. Yes, they are a softer wood, but it is ok. We have been in our home for 3 1/2 years. We have a few dings, like Tonka truck ramming into them and a pan banging the side when pulling it out of the cupboard stuff like that. But, it is just not that bad. I really like the looks of them. A few dings here and there, can happen with any wood.
If you are getting hardwood floors, I would suggest a distressed look because the dings will happen and they will only blend in. Also, if you get a shiny finish, you will regret it, you can see every dust ball or footprint, it will drive you bonkers! We have a matte finish and I really like it!
I am full of house opinions! Good luck, all so fun!

  3. LOL This post made me laugh. Dustin you're funny, and although i don't want Mom and Dad to "cheapen" the look of their new house, it would be pretty sweet if HGTV did come and do it.

  4. So Mom and Dad met with the cabinet builder the other day and they are NOT going with oak so we can all breathe a little easier. I think they told me they are going with the knotty alder, but I can't remember for sure, I mostly remember it wasn't oak.
